Some
teens came to the summer Leadership Camp, wanting
to learn the leadership skills that would help them become leaders in
their schools – others came because their parents wanted them
to learn leadership skills. They didn't know what to expect.
Some
thought it would be a week of boring lectures. Instead, after the
week long program of exciting and fun student leadership activities, they left, not
only with leadership skills, but also with leadership
confidence and a determination to take an active role at
their schools.
This first youth leadership training course was part of Greenhill School’s Summer
on the Hill Program, and then, Southern Methodist University's Youth
Summer Program. This one-week youth- leadership skills for teenagers - training program
was unique because it was lead by two corporate trainers rather than teachers
at the school. The bonus was that the students received the same type
of training that is provided for successful adult leaders in corporate
America.
Amy Harris of SmallByte Workshops, and Harriet Meyerson of The Confidence
Center, both Dallas, Texas training and consulting firms, created the
week-long student leadership training for the teenagers in middle and high school. “Leaders have to be able
to create a vision and mobilize their followers to carry it out,”
said Harris.
Presentation skills
Presentation
skills are essential to leadership, and during the week the
students had several opportunities to give extemporaneous speeches
while they practiced the persuasive skills of eye contact, movement,
and vocal variety.
Planning
& Teambuilding Skills
Students also
had several opportunities to practice teambuilding activities. In one teambuilding
exercise they pretended they were students at a new school. Their task
was to choose the school name, motto, colors, and mascot for the school
as well as create plans for an October school event. After brainstorming
for ideas, instead of the usual Halloween party, the event they chose
was an international carnival with booths and food from different countries,
and an international dance in the school gym.
Building
Trust
“Without
trust, a leader won’t have any followers,” explained
Amy Harris as she prepared a team exercise in creating trust.
The exercise required
some of the students to coach their blindfolded team members through a
fake swamp without being eaten by (plastic) alligators. This was one of the most favorite youth leadership activities.
Creative
thinking and Innovation
“Without
innovation there can be no progress,” said Meyerson who
is a strong believer in individual creativity.
Brainstorming
techniques taught the young student leaders how to come up with innovative
ideas and develop their creativity. The workshop also included the innovative
organizational skills of mind mapping and storyboarding.
Confidence
Building
At a time when
teens want to conform to each other, confidence-building student leadership activities
helped these students become aware of their uniqueness and their own leadership
qualities. Because leaders must have the courage to act in spite of their
fears, Meyerson taught the teens how to use their own “Courage
Experiences” to access their inner courage
at any time.
Listening
Skills
The youth leadership training stressed the importance of
listening attentively to be effective. Exercises in listening both as a group,
and in one-on-one conversations highten the awareness of the importance
of listening. Students also learned how to use active listening skills to
make sure they understood what the person meant.
Dealing
with Different Personality Styles
Student leadership development includes learning how to
relate to all types of people. Students learn the four basic personality
styles and how to best relate to each type. They also get a better understanding
of their own personality style. This makes it easier for students to work
closely with other people.
Polishing
the Diamonds
“Like polishing
a diamond, there are many facets that go into the making of a leader,
and each one is important,” stated Meyerson. The youth leadership training week ended with
presentations by the students about a leader of their choice, a well-earned
certificate for each student and a graduation party.
“The teenage years are the critical
period for developing leadership skills,”
said Barbara Johnson, Director of Summer on the Hill at Greenhill
School in Addison, TX, who made the decision to hire corporate
trainers to teach the leadership program.
Any student can grow in leadership skills with the proper instruction
and practice. Our country needs strong and courageous men and women who

My son, took the youth
leadershiptraining class with you at the beginning of the summer. He had a
wonderful experience.
My son had a VERY
difficult school year last year. He had such negative feed back from
his teachers, they were constantly reprimanding him for his efforts.
He is a very creative thinker and very much out of the box. The reoccurring
problem would be that they asked him to do something, he would sincerely
come up with an idea which they did not like and hence "He
became the difficult student".
His teachers
in the past have instead labeled him difficult, but you were
able to make him feel successful for his efforts. He came home feeling
very good about himself and what he did each day.
Our son very much needed to feel good about himself in relations to
"school" performance. While your class was not formal school,
he did get the sense of what it feels like to be honored for his uniqueness
in a classroom setting.

regards to his experience in your class: "The
teacher's like me mom", "They really do interesting things",
"They ask us to do something and they don't get mad at us when
we do it", "They are not picky and they let us come up with
our own ideas", "If its not right, they don't yell at us
and make us feel bad", "They don't embarrass us in front
of the other kids".
I was very concerned about my son by the end of the school year. He
looked very depressed and beaten down. Since your class, he has been
able to build himself back up and it brings tears to my eyes to see
him so happy with life.

Here's
what teachers and youth group leaders have to say...
So
far, we have had four meetings and covered the first two lessons
and part of three. There are 12 kids who have signed up for the
Leadership classes. We will be starting on writing speeches this
week.
Because
I have been away, the last couple of lessons have been conducted
by two colleagues of mine. Like me, they found the lessons to be
extremely well designed, clear, to the point, they kept the kids
focused on the goal and purpose of the various topics of discussion
as well as on the activities.
The
lessons are very interactive, not teacher-centered at all. They
also create an awareness in the kids, and make them think of issues
in the context of Leadership.

they have helped me gain the confidence that even though I don't
