Two-Minute On-the-Job Morale BoostersTHE BOTTOM LINE: Taking positive steps at work can help you increase your motivation and brighten your day.If you've got those after holiday blues, you can brighten up every day of the new year with these easy, motivating, two-minute morale boosters. "Motivation is a powerful tool for success and achievement, but it must be practiced on a daily basis. Many say that motivation wears off, which is true...But so does bathing, that is why you must do it daily," says Willie Jolley, author of It Only Takes A Minute To Change Your Life! TICKLE YOUR FUNNY BONEWhenever you see a funny cartoon or joke, put it in a folder. When you're feeling down, reach for your humor file, and enjoy a few minutes of fun and laughter. READ PERSONAL STORIESKeep a book of inspiring stories at your desk. Reading even one story can lift your spirits. Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of the best selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books, has as his motto, "Changing the World One Story at a Time..." Make yours, "Boosting morale one story at a time." WRITE A GRATITUDE LISTWhen we feel blue, we tend to have a pity party and think of all the negatives in our lives. Instead, take two minutes to make a list of the many things for which you are grateful. You will see your sadness transformed into happiness, as you become aware of your many blessings. RELIVE HAPPY MEMORIESClose your eyes and replay your own mental movies by visualizing a time in your life when you were happiest. It might be a favorite childhood experience, an exciting vacation, a family celebration, or a special time spent with a friend or relative. Choose either one memory and visualize it in detail, or switch between several. When you open your eyes you will feel refreshed and energized. LISTEN TO MUSICA wise person once said, "We don't sing because we're happy; we're happy because we sing." Sing out loud if you have your own office. Sing to yourself if you work alongside others. If your company allows it, bring a tape player to work, and use earphones to listen to your favorite songs. SPREAD GOOD CHEERTake a two-minute walk around your office and give everyone you see a cheery "Hello" and a compliment. When you spread good cheer, you can't help but brighten your own day at the same time. DRAW A PICTUREKeep a drawing pad and some crayons or colored pencils at your desk and draw whatever comes to mind. You may not be a budding Rembrant or Picasso, but you can get a feeling of joy from your own creation. ENERGIZE WITH EXERCIZEStand up and stretch your muscles. Reach for the sky. Touch your toes. Do some knee bends, push-ups, and sit- ups. Jog in place and do jumping jacks. This will get your blood flowing and wake you up. MAKE PLANS FOR FUNHaving fun recharges your battery. Plan an outing with your kids, a romantic evening with your mate, or an exciting vacation. Planning can be half the fun, and you'll have something to look forward to. SEIZE THE MOMENTLife is made up of minutes. It's up to you to make them into moments of happiness. As Jolley notes in his book, "I have only just a minute, only sixty seconds in it. Forced upon me can't refuse it, didn't seek it, didn't choose it, but it's up to me to use it. I must suffer if I lose it, give account if I abuse it, just a tiny little minute, but an eternity is in it! By Harriet Meyerson, president of The Confidence Center in Dallas, Texas.
