The Great American Smokeout
Thursday November 21, 2013
——————————————–
Norma was a charming nurse who had smoked for many years. She had everything to live for – she was loved by her patients, staff, and family, and even had a new grandbaby, but she was only 42 when she died of lung cancer.
Some of your employees may be smokers. Here is an opportunity to help save them from the harmful effects of long term smoking – Emphysema, heart disease, and lung cancer.
The American Cancer Society holds the Great American Smokeout every year on the third Thursday of November to help smokers quit cigarettes for at least one day, in hopes they will quit forever.
** How Your Company Can Help **
- Announce your company’s participation in The Great American Smokeout at a staff meeting.
- Spread the word – Put up posters, send e-mails, and memos about The Great American Smokeout.
- Pass out chewing gum, lollypops, or mints on that day.
- Give everyone a stress ball to hold instead of a cigarette.
- Give a reward to any employee who stops smoking on Thursday Nov. 20th – even just for the day.
- Give a reward to any employee who signs a pledge to stop smoking for good.
- Form a Quitters Club that meets regularly for support and encouragement, or assign buddies to employees who want to quit smoking.
- Have a follow up celebration and give awards to employees who have not smoked for 90 days.
- Ask a local doctor or someone from your local Cancer Society to give a talk on the effects of smoking.

Joke of the Week
An efficiency expert concluded his lecture with a note of caution. “You don’t want to try these techniques at home.”
“Why not?” asked somebody from the audience.
“I watched my wife’s routine at breakfast for years,” the expert explained. “She made lots of trips between the refrigerator, stove, table and cabinets, often carrying a single item at a time.
One day I told her, ‘Hon, why don’t you try carrying several things at once?'”
“Did it save time?” the guy in the audience asked.
“Actually, yes,” replied the expert. “It used to take her 20 minutes to make breakfast. Now I do it in seven.”
