I’m an administrative assistant who has taken the initiative in my company to improve employee morale. We have faced layoffs and benefit cutbacks and the employees who remain employed are still angry.
Despite all this, I moved ahead with an Employee Shareboard. My intent is to subliminally change the culture – to get these folks (mostly male) to start sharing their family lives and interests with the rest of us in the hopes that it will instill a sense of family.
I ordered the 4 X 6 ft. bulletin board and mounted it near the coffee room. I purchased colorful papers to decorate it. I want the Shareboard to be like a giant, interactive scrapbook.
I planned photo displays for each month, varying the theme, according to the season. The board will always be filled with Dilbert cartoons, inspiration, ideas, and opportunities for sharing.
I prepared a PowerPoint presentation that introduced the Shareboard to the employees, driving home the point that it’s their board, to use as they want.
These are some examples:
In November the ShareBoard invited employees’ thoughts (I always write as though it’s the ShareBoard talking, not me) on Thanksgiving Memories. Those who posted within the week were entered into the drawing for tickets to a sports event.
In December, the ShareBoard asked “What is Your Favorite Gift to Give or Receive?” and encouraged photos. It also asked for sharing of family traditions.
In January, the ShareBoard asked “What are your big plans for the new year?”
The ShareBoard has posed other Q’s, too, like – “If you could change the world (or your workplace) what would that look like?”
The ShareBoard is often informational. Whenever I get newsy emails or pictures from former employees, I post them under -We’ve Got Mail- Employees really enjoy the photos.
When an employee’s dog was attacked by coyotes, I obtained photos of Snubs’ post-surgery progress and displayed them. Before this, many people didn’t even know that our manager, had a snoopy-type dog.
It’s all about sharing.

Joke of the Week
My boss’s young son was having minor surgery. When Jamie woke up in the recovery room, he looked around and said excitedly:
“I remember you! You’re my mom and dad, and I have a sister, and I know where we live!”
My boss and his wife looked at each other, puzzled.
“Just before they put me to sleep for the operation,” Jamie explained,
“the nurse said, ‘Don’t worry, dear, when you wake up you won’t remember a thing.'”
